HanuMan is the first Telugu superhero film: Prasanth Varma
Director Prasanth Varma’s upcoming movie Hanu-Man went on floors on Friday. The film was launched with a customary puja in Hyderabad in the presence of the film’s cast and crew. “The Dawn of A New Cinematic Universe #HanuManTheOrign,” tweeted Prasanth, while sharing a photo from the launch event. Prasanth aspires to create a cinematic universe of superheroes beginning with Hanu-Man, which is inspired by the Hindu god Hanuman. The filmmakers have promised that this film will be a “visual extravaganza”. Hanu-Man stars Sajja Teja in the lead. Sajja had made his debut as a lead actor with Prasanth’s last directorial Zombie Reddy.
Rayalaseema has provided a primal setting for numerous violent movies in Telugu for many years now. Prasanth capitalised on Rayalaseema’s reputation in popular culture to make a dark comedy that revolved around a zombie outbreak.
Prasanth is known for experimenting with genres since his debut film Awe, which won multiple National Award for Best Special Effects and Best Makeup in 2018. His second film was a detective thriller Kalki, which was apparently inspired by India’s popular fictional detective character Byomkesh Bakshi. Before Zombie Reddy, he later helmed That Is Mahalakshmi, which had Tamannaah in the lead. The film was the official remake of the Bollywood hit Queen. However, this film is yet to be released.

When the director, who rose to fame with National-Award winning 2018-film, Awe, announced a film titled Hanu-Man a couple of months ago, many thought it was an animated film. However, he dismissed the rumour, clarifying that the film is a live-action entertainer. “Hanu-Man is the first original superhero film in Telugu,” shares Prasanth Varma, adding that the film is inspired by the Hindu god Hanuman. The director says that he was always fascinated with superhero films since childhood and had wanted to become one in his childhood. So it was natural that he dreamt of making a superhero film, too. As for the title of the film, Prasanth says he chose it because it was a dedication to many who, when they think of any superpower or a superhero in Hindu mythology, we remember Lord Hanuman. In the film, the name of the protagonist is Hanu-Man. “The film, of which we have completed 40% of the shooting, is about the consequences of a commoner getting superpower,” the director states, adding that his protagonist, played by Teja Sajja, is quite different from Lord Hanuman.
Speaking of the lead actor in the film, we wonder why the director preferred an actor who is just two films old for such a high-budget film. “I want a new face because the audience has to believe that a common man can do wonders if he gets powers. So for that believability factor, I had to get an underdog,” he replies. Promising that the film will be a “visual extravaganza”, Prasanth Varma tells us that it will be high on VFX, which will make up for around 35% of the film.
Superhero genre films are rare in Indian cinema, not just Tollywood, even if the genre is common in Hollywood for years. Looks like Prasanth is excited to localise this genre and bring forth something new to the Telugu audience. The director will have to weave the story in with high-octane action sequences, that are common for the genre, and it remains to be seen how he’ll fare. The title also suggests he has been inspired from mythology and looks like he’ll be making it his own. The cast and crew are yet to be revealed. Prasanth Varma made a stellar debut in Tollywood with the multi-starrer anthology Awe, which brought forth a new kind of cinema to the film industry. His sophomore film Kalki, which was a suspense thriller was also received well. His last film Zombie Reddy localised the idea of zombies to Tollywood. Further details are awaited.

The regular shoot of Hanu-Man is expected to commence very soon.
